Atomic has firmed in better for the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes
The 14-horse final field of two-year-olds for the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), running as Caulfield Race 7 this Saturday, was released this morning followed by the updated Blue Diamond Stakes odds.
While the talented and as yet undefeated Sepoy is odds-on favourite paying $1.60 to become the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes winner through Luxbet, money has started coming in for a rival.
The Lee Freedman-trained Atomic is the only horse to firm in the Blue Diamond Stakes odds at Luxbet.
Opening as the $13 third-favourite, Commands colt Atomic swiftly shortened into $12 before firming again now at a quote of $11 to claim a Blue Diamond Stakes upset.
Atomic has an ideal barrier two draw for the Blue Diamond Stakes on Saturday and will be ridden by Craig Newitt.
Lightly-raced, Atomic has had just one career start to date when they impressively won the Listed Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on February 9 with Ben Melham in the mount.
Melham is engaged to ride the Danny O’Brien-trained Running Tall in the Blue Diamond Stakes.
Stratum colt Running Tall, runner-up to Sepoy in the Blue Diamond Prelude, is paying $17 at Luxbet for Saturday’s showdown.
On debut Atomic beat 10 runners home including fellow Blue Diamond Stakes acceptor Metonymy who ran fourth.
Atomic was a late entry into this year’s Blue Diamond Stakes, Freedman only paying up for the emerging juvenile at the last minute.
Freedman has a two-horse assault in Victoria’s richest race for two-year-olds having also paid up for Masthead.
Luxbet have Masthead as a $31 chance in their Blue Diamond Stakes betting after the last-start winner of the $250,000 Inglis Premier (1200m) drew a horror barrier set to jump from gate 13.
