MacDonald Excited with Champagne Stakes Chances for Go Indy Go

South Australian trainer Leon MacDonald’s hopes of success for Go Indy Go in this afternoon’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick have continued to grow as the talented two-year-old has reportedly taken well to a lead-up week in Sydney.

Charging home to win the Group 3 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and earn her place in today’s major race for two-year-olds, Macdonald told AAP he hopes success in the Champagne Stakes will lead to appearances in major events over the spring.

“My foreman has been with her for the past week in Sydney and said she had settled in really well” Macdonald said.

“She is a professional filly who is getting better as she steps up in distance.

“I’d like to think she would be a Thousand Guineas and Oaks filly in the spring and who knows after that.

“I don’t know about a wet track so we’ll have to wait and see what it’s like come the race.”

Confirmed to be partnered by up-and-coming jockey Chad Schofield this afternoon, the exciting Bernardini filly was put through her paces by father Glyn Schofield on Tuesday morning and will line up for the Champagne Stakes in peak condition.

“Glyn Schofield rode her for me and said she worked well and handled the right handed direction” Macdonald added.

“Of course it’s different in a race but all seems well.”

Debuting with a strong turn of foot to finish second in the Listed Cinderella Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville on March 10th, Go Indy Go was again unlucky not to secure her maiden victory when finishing just in the red of London Lolly in the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) in her only other appearance prior to success last time out.

Allocated the central barrier 6 for this afternoon’s Champagne Stakes, Go Indy Go is currently sole occupant of the fourth line of betting for success at generous $6.50 odds.

Winner of the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) last weekend, Veuvelicious is currently outright favourite to claim a maiden Group 1 title this afternoon at a quote of $3.50, ahead of Peggy Jean ($3.60) and Bachman ($5).
