Just one Northern Hemisphere-trained raider has taken out Australasia’s weight-for-age championship and on Saturday French galloper Vadamos is out to be the next with an upset 2016 Cox Plate victory.

The $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) looks to be Winx’s for the taking looking at the latest markets.
Chris Waller’s superstar mare has firmed into odds-on territory at $1.95 in Cox Plate betting at Ladbrokes.com.au to secure her ninth Group 1 win, 13th victory on the trot and back-to-back Cox Plate trophies.
The price for Hartnell to beat her home in the Cox Plate quinella has eased out to $3.70, despite the strength of his Turnbull Stakes victory over the distance at Flemington over Jameka last time out.
The next best in betting at $15 is the Andre Fabre-trained Vadamos who adds the international flavour to this year’s Cox Plate field.
Two years ago the then Aidan O’Brien-trained Irish galloper Adelaide (2014) won the Cox Plate at odds of $7 in his down under debut.
Out to be the next international to beat home the locals on Saturday, the consistent Monsun stallion Vadamos jumps from barrier two one on the inside of the one to beat – Winx (3).
He won a Group 1 in over a mile last time out on September 11, but does he have enough upside to score fresh and salute at double-figures in the Cox Plate this weekend?

Why Vadamos Can Win the Cox Plate
- Has been carrying big weights in handicap races at home and looks well suited at weight-for-age
- Won the Group 1 Moulin De Longchamp (1600m) last time out and three of the past six Cox Plate champions came off a win
- That lead-up race has been won by plenty of turf stars over the years including Rock Of Gibraltar, Starcraft and Goldikova
- Has winning form at the Cox Plate distance (3-1-0-0) and has won up to 2400m – one of only three in the Cox Plate field to have saluted over a mile and a half
- Races as a six-year-old down under and two of that age have won in the past decade
- Stallions have won three of the past six editions of the race
- Seven of the past 13 Cox Plate winners started at $10 or over in betting
- Has the third highest Win Rate of the field (44%) trailing Winx (73%) and Yankee Rose (57%)
Why Vadamos Won’t be the 2016 Cox Plate Winner
- Barrier 2 hasn’t produced a Cox Plate winner since Might And Power (1998) and being one on the inside of Winx might not be the right place in this
- Goes up from 1600m to 2000m first-up so could be stretched
- Will Joao Moreira make it to Cox Plate Day for the ride?
- Only one raider has taken out the Cox Plate to date – Adelaide in 2014
- Shapes up as a better Place chance with a 72% place rate
- Winx
- Hartnell
- Winx
