A decent guide to both the Australian Guineas and Australian Cup in recent years, this weekend’s edition of the $200,000 Group 2 Caulfield Autumn Classic (1800m) attracted a sizeable 20 nominations on Monday.

The sole entry for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott is Snitzel three-year-old Farson who heads towards a seven day back-up on March 4 at Flemington in the $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).

Futures Australian Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have the in-form Farson, a winner of his past two starts over a mile at Caulfield and Moonee Valley respectively this summer, listed at $21.

He sees further than 1600m for the first time if accepted into the Caulfield Autumn Classic field and shapes up as a nice chance to give Waterhouse her third Australian Guineas success ing Al Maher (2005) and Wandjina (2015).

The shortest-priced of the Caulfield Autumn Classic nominations in the pre-field Australian Guineas betting markets at $15 meanwhile is the Ciaron Maher-trained Ruthven.

The Domesday colt has won two of his three starts to date and ran second to Morton’s Fork in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) narrowly last November.

He returned on February 11 at Caulfield in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) finishing just over two lengths away fifth behind the winner Oak Door.

Coming off a Sandown-Hillside win over the mile and looking to stretch out to the 1800m is the progressive Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Cliff Hanger, while Chris Waller’s Sizzling Bullet aims for three on the trot.

A well-performing Snitzel colt from Sydney’s best stable, Sizzling Bullet is nominated to race in Melbourne for the first time on the weekend following back-to-back Randwick victories this campaign over 1800m and 2000m respectively.

Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young have nominated Rising Red who comes off a trio of second place efforts including at Sale over 2232m in December.

The flying Darren Weir stable has Fast Plan in the mix, while Godolphin could be represented in the Caulfield Autumn Classic by the John O’Shea-trained Trenchant.
