Kingsford Smith Cup News
2025 Queensland Derby Day at Eagle Farm Postponed After Race 5 including Kingsford Smith Cup.
UPDATE: Due to visibility concerns forcing Saturday’s Eagle Farm meeting abandonment, both the Group 1 Queensland Derby and G1 Kingsford Smith Cup have been rescheduled to run next Saturday, June 7, creating a spectacular triple-feature alongside the G1 Queensland Oaks!
The Kingsford Smith Cup – formerly the BTC Cup – is an important Group 1 race held at the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
Since 2017 it has run a fortnight after its former spot on the carnival line-up moving from Doomben Racecourse to Eagle Farm. For the 2013 running of the BTC Cup the race was moved to neighbouring Eagle Farm Racecourse in a bid to lure Black Caviar to the event and this track has been the race’s permanent home since 2017.
Formerly run over 1200m, the new-look Kingsford Smith Cup is contested in late May over 1300m and remains weight-for-age race feature. Offering $1,000,000 in prize money as of 2023, the race now serves as a final stepping-stone into Queensland’s richest race – the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).
Think About It (2023) was the last horse to complete the Kingsford Smith Cup – Stradbroke Handicap double.
The new lead-up race into the Kingsford Smith Cup field is the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) a fortnight earlier and the Doomben 10,000 – Kingsford Smith Cup double was achieved in 2019 by Kiwi galloper The Bostonian.
Many top horses, usually locally trained, have run and won the race over the years but none as notable as the mighty Black Caviar who travelled to Queensland to take out the classic over Hay List back in 2011 attracting a capacity crowd at Doomben decked out in her famous salmon and black polka dot colours.
In 2018 the Kingsford Smith Cup took place over 1350m distance back at Doomben Racecourse due to the ongoing issues at Eagle Farm and was won by the previous year’s Stradbroke Handicap champ Impending.
There was no 2020 Kingsford Smith Cup held due to COVID-19.
The 2023 Kingsford Smith Cup form was franked with the winner Think About It going on to win Brisbane’s Stradbroke Handicap nest start before a big spring in Sydney headlined by his victory in the world’s richest turf race – the $20 million The Everest.
The 2024 Kingsford Smith Cup winner I Wish I Win went on to run third in that year’s Manikato Stakes in Melbourne over the spring, while the form was also franked with the runner-up Bella Nipotina finishing a next-up second in the Stradbroke Handicap before her Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara win. Bella Nipotina also went to Sydney that spring for a huge campaign headlined by her The Everest triumph.
The rescheduled $1 million 2025 Kingsford Smith Cup runs on Saturday June 7, 2025 as a key lead-up to the Stradbroke Handicap having been moved to the Queensland Oaks Day card after racing at Eagle Farm on the Saturday was abandoned.

- Each Way: #13 Bosustow ($8.50 at time of publish)
While JOLIETSTAR (11) is undoubtedly the favourite, for exceptional Each Way value in the Kingsford Smith Cup, look no further than the promising young colt BOSUSTOW (4). This consistent son of Blue Point, from the Archibald stable, was sensational first-up, romping home by six lengths in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas in the wet. Now stepping up to elite company at Eagle Farm, his versatility on all track conditions and proven second-up winning form – including a brave Group 1 second across the Tasman – suggests he has the class to surprise from gate four with Josh Parr aboard.
2025 Kingsford Smith Cup Field
The Kingsford Smith Cup Field – formerly the BTC Cup – attracts a class line-up of local and interstate sprinting talent heading towards the Stradbroke Handicap a fortnight later back at Eagle Farm Racecourse each year. Since 2017, the Kingsford Smith Cup field features gallopers coming off a lead-up run in the Doomben 10,000 two weeks prior.
In 2024 the same two horses ran the quinella in both the Doomben 10,000 and Kingsford Smith Cup with I Wish I Win turning the tables on Bella Nipotina in the latter.
The official Kingsford Smith Cup 2025 field and barriers are announced by Racing Queensland on the Tuesday of race week and once released will be published in full below.
The 2025 Kingsford Smith Cup final field features a stellar line-up of winter sprinters led in betting by Chris Waller’s Newmarket Handicap winning mare Joliestar and former The Everest start Giga Kick coming off a third fresh in the Group 1 The Goodwood in South Australia.

BTC Cup / Kingsford Smith Cup History
The race now known as the Kingsford Smith Cup was inaugurated in 1964 as the J.T. Delaney Quality Handicap and has always played a part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
It has undergone a host of name changes over the years including the BTC Cup, which it was known as from 2004 – 2016. In 2017 a rescheduled Queensland winter program saw the race name changed to the Kingsford Smith Cup. It also moved from Doomben Racecourse to Eagle Farm Racecourse and the distance was upped from 1200m to 1350m.
The event began as a Principal Race and was elevated to its current Group 1 status in 2006 when Gee I Jane took out top honours. A host of talented sprinters have won the BTC Cup over the years including Apache Cat (2008), Black Caviar (2011), and Malaguerra (2016).
The last back-to-back BTC Cup winner was Buck’s Price (1993-94).
In 2022, local trainer Desleigh Forster celebrated her first Group 1 success with smart four-year-old Apache Chase saluting at $12.
The 2025 edition was originally washed out and moved a week later to the Queensland Oaks Day card.
